FAQ

Q: Is American Marine Training Centers V.A. Approved?

A: Yes, we are.  All of our COURSES are approved by the V.A. for Veterans eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill.  Please take a look at our V.A. INFORMATION page for details.

Q:  How much does the course cost?

A:  Master Course:  $990.00 OR OUPV (Six-Pack) Course:  $855.00.

(While other schools are increasing their prices, we at American Marine Training Centers, LLC, have DECREASED our prices to make the Master Course or the OUPV Course more economically attainable for everyone.)

Save yourself money and take the Masterís License Course.  It is NOT necessary to take the OUPV License Course first and then take an upgrade to Master License Course.  If you qualify for an OUPV License, you also qualify for a Masterís License.

CONTACT US for details or to reserve your seat in a course.

Q: How long is the course?

A: The OUPV Course runs 7 days straight, 8 hours a day.  The Master Course runs 10 days straight, 8 hours a day.  Courses start on a Saturday so you will be done with the OUPV by Friday OR if you are taking the Master instead, by Monday.

Q: Do I have to go to the Coast Guard to take the exams?

A: No.  All of our exams are approved by the Coast Guard and those exams are administered by us at our facility.

Q: What is included in the cost of the course?

A: Everything you need to take and complete the course you selected is provided.  We provide books, exams, instruction, certificates, assistance with paperwork, use of plotting tools, everything you need - down to pencils, pens and scratch paper!

Q: Do I need to get my physical exam, drug test,(Transportation Worker Identification Card) TWIC card, and First Aid/CPR card before my class starts?

A: No.  You can obtain those after you have completed our course.  They are not a pre-requisite to taking our course.  For the convenience of our students, we do offer a separate Coast Guard and V.A. approved First Aid/AED/CPR course.

Q: Do I need to study prior to the class?

A: There is nothing you need to study in advance of the course. There is not a list of reading material/books that we recommend the students purchase/study prior to the course. You will receive an attachment via email from us, upon your seat reservation confirmation, which we recommend you review.

Q: What do I need to bring to class?

A: The only things you need to bring to the class is a Photo Identification Card and a positive attitude.  The Coast Guard requires us to verify your identity.

Q: How is sea time documented?

A: Time spent on your own vessel (over 16 feet) can be documented by you, as long as you own the vessel. If you have spent time on someone else's vessel, you must have the owner sign the form documenting your time on that vessel.  The Coast Guard designates one day of sea service as at least 4 hours underway (away from the dock).  You cannot count more than one day in a 24-hour period.

Q: How much sea time do I need? (Also see our WHICH LICENSE IS FOR ME? page, which covers the same details.)

A: OUPV Inland - Minimum of 360 days of qualifying sea service time (back to the age of 16 years old) with 90 of those days being in the last three years.

OUPV Near Coastal - Minimum of 360 days of qualifying sea service time (back to the age of 16 years old) with 90 of those days being in the last three years and 90 of those days being on Coastal Waters.

Master Inland - Minimum of 360 days of qualifying sea service time (back to the age of 16 years old) with 90 of those days being in the last three years.

Master Near Coastal - Minimum of 720 days of qualifying sea service time (back to the age of 16 years old) with 90 of those days being in the last three years with 360 days spent on coastal waters.

Sea Service time counts from time on the water from age 16 and a vessel greater than 16 feet.  Certain military sea time counts towards your license also.

Q: Are there places to stay near the classroom?

A: Yes, please go to our LODGING page for links to local RV Parks (some have cabins available), Hotels and John Wayne Marina, should you decide to stay on your boat.

Q: How do I reserve a seat?

A: Please see our HOW DO I RESERVE A SEAT? page for details.  For any potential VA benefits eligible students, please see our V.A. INFORMATION page, as the seat reservation procedure in this circumstance is slightly different.

Q: Do you offer offsite training classes?

A: Yes.  Please see our OFFSITE TRAINING CLASSES page for further details.
